Kit Commerce is a built-in digital commerce layer inside Kit. You can create a product, set a price, share the checkout link, and start collecting payments — all without leaving Kit or stitching together a separate payment platform. Buyers pay via a Kit-hosted checkout page, receive their digital product automatically, and become subscribers on your list if they aren’t already.
Kit Commerce revenue is tied to your subscriber profile — buyers become subscribers if they aren’t already, giving you a direct marketing relationship post-purchase. Every sale grows your list and your audience simultaneously.

What You Can Sell

Kit Commerce supports four product types:
  • Digital downloads — PDFs, templates, zip files, Notion templates, Lightroom presets, audio files, and any other downloadable asset. You upload the file in Kit; it’s delivered to buyers automatically via email after purchase.
  • Online courses — Build lessons and modules directly inside Kit’s course builder. Students access the course via a Kit-hosted course portal — no third-party platform required.
  • Paid newsletters and memberships — Charge subscribers a recurring fee for access to premium content, a private community, or exclusive emails.
  • Pay-what-you-want products — Set a minimum price and a suggested price. Buyers choose what to pay above the minimum. Great for lead magnets, community access, or supporters who want to pay more.

Creating and Selling Your First Digital Product

1

Connect your Stripe account

Before creating a paid product, go to Account Settings → Payments and connect your Stripe account. Kit uses Stripe to process all payments. If you don’t have a Stripe account, create one at stripe.com — it takes about 5 minutes.
2

Navigate to Commerce

In your Kit dashboard, go to Commerce → Products and click New Product.
3

Choose your product type

Select the type that fits what you’re selling: Digital Download, Course, Membership, or Pay-What-You-Want. Your choice determines what configuration options appear next.
4

Add product details

Fill in:
  • Title — Clear and specific (e.g., “Email Marketing Starter Kit” not “My Product”)
  • Description — Explain what buyers get and why it matters to them
  • Price — Set your fixed price, minimum, or leave at $0 for free
  • Cover image — A clean product image increases perceived value
5

Upload your file or build your course

For digital downloads, click Upload File and select your asset. Kit stores and delivers the file automatically. For courses, click Add Lessons and build your curriculum directly in Kit’s course editor.
6

Configure the thank-you page

Customise the post-purchase message buyers see. This is also where you can set up a redirect to an external URL if you want to send buyers somewhere specific after purchase.
7

Publish and share

Click Publish. Kit generates a checkout URL for your product. Share this link in emails, on your website, in social bios — anywhere your audience will find it.
8

Set up post-purchase automations

In Automations, create a rule triggered by Subscriber purchases [your product]. Add actions: remove from any active sales sequences, add a ‘customer’ tag, and start an onboarding sequence. This happens automatically for every buyer.
Use Kit Commerce for your first digital product even if you plan to move to a dedicated course platform later. It’s the fastest way to validate that your audience will pay for something before investing in a full course build. If your Kit product sells, you’ll have the confidence (and revenue) to invest in a more robust platform.

The Checkout Experience

Your buyers see a clean, Kit-hosted checkout page that includes your product name, description, cover image, and a payment form. The checkout supports:
  • Credit and debit cards
  • All Stripe-supported payment methods (varies by region)
  • Automatic receipt emails via Stripe
You don’t need to build or host a checkout page yourself. Kit handles it entirely.

Digital File Delivery

When someone purchases a digital download, Kit automatically sends them an email with a secure download link. You don’t need to set up any separate delivery system. The download link is time-limited and personal to the buyer.

Revenue Reporting

Kit’s Commerce dashboard shows you:
  • Total revenue — All-time and by time period
  • Sales by product — Which products are selling and at what volume
  • Subscriber lifetime value — Revenue per subscriber as a rough profitability signal
  • Individual transaction history — Buyer details, purchase date, and amount

Fees and Pricing

Kit charges a transaction fee on the free plan on top of Stripe’s standard processing fees. On paid Kit plans, Kit’s transaction fee is waived — you pay only Stripe’s standard rate. Check the current fee structure at kit.com/pricing since rates change periodically.

Kit Commerce vs. Third-Party Platforms

Kit Commerce is ideal when you want to move fast and stay in one tool. Consider a dedicated platform (Teachable, Podia, Gumroad) when you need features like:
  • Advanced course completion tracking and certificates
  • Community forums
  • Affiliate programme management
  • Multi-instructor support
For most solopreneurs selling a first product, Kit Commerce is the fastest path from idea to first sale.
