# Kit Tips and Recommendations: Monetise and Grow Your List

> Use Kit Tips to accept fan payments and Kit Recommendations to grow your list through mutual newsletter referrals with other creators in your niche.

Kit gives you two lightweight but high-impact tools for monetising your audience's goodwill and growing your list through peer collaboration: **Tips**, a direct fan-support mechanism with no product attached, and **Recommendations**, a mutual referral system that puts your newsletter in front of other creators' audiences. Neither requires a complex setup — but both can meaningfully move the needle for independent creators.

## Kit Tips

Kit Tips is a simple tip jar mechanism. Readers pay you any amount they choose — you set a suggested amount, but there's no floor and no product attached. It's pure goodwill monetisation: your audience pays because they value what you create.

Tips work especially well for writers, podcasters, and educators who publish a high volume of free content. If your audience consistently tells you your work is valuable, a tip page gives them somewhere to act on that sentiment.

### Setting Up Your Tip Page

1. In your Kit dashboard, navigate to **Commerce → Tips**
2. Click **Set Up Tips**
3. Add a **profile photo** and a short personalised **message** (explain what the tips support — your time, your tools, your research)
4. Set your **suggested amounts** — three tiers work well, e.g., $3 / $5 / \$10
5. Click **Publish** — Kit generates a tip page URL instantly

### Sharing Your Tip Page

Once published, add your tip page link to:

* Your email footer or PS line
* Your newsletter's 'About' page
* Your social media bios
* A dedicated email to your most engaged subscribers

### When to Use Tips

Tips perform best when you have an engaged, loyal audience that regularly consumes your free content. If you're getting replies and replies along the lines of "this was so helpful — how can I support you?", that's your signal. A tip page gives those readers a frictionless answer.

<Note>
  Only recommend newsletters you've actually read and would genuinely recommend to your audience. Your credibility is on the line every time your name appears as a recommendation. A bad recommendation swap that sends your subscribers to a low-quality newsletter costs you trust — and trust is harder to rebuild than a subscriber count.
</Note>

## Kit Recommendations

Kit Recommendations is a list-growth feature built on mutual newsletter referrals. After someone subscribes to your list, Kit can show them a **"You might also like"** screen featuring other creators' newsletters — and those same creators display your newsletter to their new subscribers in return.

It's word-of-mouth list growth at scale, and it costs nothing except the time to set up the swap.

### How It Works

1. A new subscriber opts in to your list
2. Immediately after confirming, they see a Kit-hosted **Recommendations screen**
3. That screen shows them 1–4 other newsletters you endorse, with a one-click subscribe button
4. Your newsletter appears on the Recommendations screen of your partner creators' new subscribers

The result: your list grows from a steady trickle of qualified subscribers who share interests with your existing audience — the highest-quality cold traffic you can get.

### Setting Up Recommendations

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Recommendations">
    Navigate to **Grow → Recommendations** in your Kit dashboard.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Find creators to partner with">
    Browse the creator directory in Kit. Filter by niche, audience size, or engagement rate. Look for creators whose audience would genuinely benefit from your newsletter.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Send a swap request">
    Click **Request Recommendation Swap** on a creator's profile. They'll receive a notification and can accept or decline. You can also reach out directly via email to set up the swap first and then confirm in Kit.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Configure your Recommendations screen">
    Once a swap is confirmed, your partner's newsletter appears on your Recommendations screen automatically. You can reorder your recommendations and set how many appear at once.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Track performance">
    Kit shows you how many new subscribers came from each recommendation partner. Review this monthly and prioritise your strongest-performing swaps.
  </Step>
</Steps>

### What Makes a Good Recommendation Swap

Not all swaps are equal. The best partnerships share three characteristics:

* **Similar audience size** — A creator with 10× your list size will send you far more subscribers than you send them, which can create friction. Aim for rough parity (within 2–3×).
* **Complementary, not competing topics** — A productivity newsletter and a personal finance newsletter work well together. Two productivity newsletters compete for the same attention.
* **Similar engagement rates** — A list of 5,000 with 45% open rates is more valuable than 20,000 with 10% open rates. Ask potential partners about their engagement before committing.

<Tip>
  Recommendations is one of the highest-ROI features Kit offers for list growth. A swap with a creator of similar size typically adds 30–100 new subscribers per month with zero ongoing effort after setup. Even a single well-matched swap can outperform a paid advertising campaign in both volume and subscriber quality.
</Tip>

### Tracking Recommendation Performance

In **Grow → Recommendations**, Kit shows you a performance breakdown for each active swap:

* Subscribers sent to your partners from your list
* Subscribers received from your partners' lists
* Net gain or loss per partnership

Review this data every month. Remove underperforming swaps and add new ones to keep your Recommendations screen fresh and effective.

## The SparkLoop Integration

Kit Recommendations is built on SparkLoop infrastructure. If you want more advanced referral capabilities — like incentivised referral programmes where subscribers earn rewards for sharing your newsletter — you can integrate with SparkLoop directly. SparkLoop's native Kit integration syncs subscriber data in both directions and gives you a full referral dashboard separate from Kit's built-in analytics.
